Tokyo, Japan- March 4th 2010,
Silicon Studio Corporation, a leading provider of digital content creation tools for the entertainment industry, is creating an umbrella brand for its proprietary series of real-time graphics middleware for game developers, which Silicon Studio plans to exhibit in the Game Developers Conference 2010 (GDC 2010) to be held in San Francisco from March 9, 2010.

GDC is the largest conference in the world for game developers with more than 300 sessions, panel discussions, workshops and roundtable discussions inviting experts from many fields for lively information exchanges. GDC has steadily grown to include mobile as well as iPhone games in recent years, to which more than 17,000 people from around the world’s game industry gather to share the latest knowledge and information related to the industry.

In the exhibition hall where many technology providers display their offerings, Silicon Studio will have a booth that exhibits various next-generation graphics featuring the “Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin)” unit that enables previously unimaginable visual expressions.

The Seven Lucky Gods include “DAIKOKU: Advanced Shader Pipeline,” “YEBISU: Pithy Post Effect” as well as the real-time 3D VFX tool “BISHAMON” that can be incorporated into middleware. In addition to relieving programmers from the burden of creating their own graphic drawing mechanisms, these tools help improve the drawing performances. These tools have been developed based on the actual shop floor requirements and expertise of experienced developers focusing on multiplatform portability and expandability to offer an exceptional development efficiency as well as scalability. Silicon Studio also plans to exhibit the fourth member of the Seven Lucky Gods.

The Silicon Studio booth will introduce GDC 2010 visitors to the world of overwhelming real-time graphics through a naked-eye 3D LCD panel, courtesy of NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd.

Also the “MotionPortrait” technology that generates realistic 3D facial animation from still images will be demonstrated at the booth.

Silicon Studio intends to expand and further develop the Seven Lucky Gods brand family tools in its quest to bring the “Gods of Fortune” to the game development arena and the overall game market. Using the GDC 2010 as a takeoff board, Silicon Studio expects to expand domestically developed technologies to overseas markets and to propose process improvements to game developers who are eager to further streamline their activities.

< The exhibited product is as follows >
  • DAIKOKU
  • DAIKOKU is a multi-platform next generation rendering engine that utilizes a programmable shader that enables game developers to make use of the state-of-the-art shading techniques without ever writing shader codes. DAIKOKU offers a versatile yet compact low-level API and may be integrated with existing game engines game developers have built. The ASP enables a developer to quickly start projects for the next generation game consoles.
  • YEBIS
  • YEBIS is a multi-platform library that offers various real-time post-effect features to the game developers’ environment. Utilizing the High Dynamic Range (HDR) rendering technique, YEBIS adds post-effects including glare, depth of field (de-focusing), optical simulation and color correction to the rendering process enabling more natural and realistic scenes. As the quality of the effects may be specified according to the characteristics of any scene, those effects can be applied without placing unnecessary burdens on the system.
  • BISHAMON
  • BISHAMON is a VFX generation tool developed by Matchlock Corporation for game developers to generate fire, smoke or various “magic” effects in 3D. Because the tool drastically streamlines the trial and error process through an intuitive user interface, designer can generate effects without requiring intervention by programmers. Compared to the regular process that involves use of modeling tools, BISHAMON enables designer to complete the effect generation process all through the final visual adjustments, realizing a very efficient development workflow with correspondingly reduced development cost.

  • MotionPortrait
  • MotionPortrait generates a 3D CG model out of a single human portrait using precise anchor points to produce natural face animation just like an actual video footage of a human face. Its facial expression engine allows simple controls over various facial movements including smile, laugh, speech or looking at something. The animation can also be used on hand drawn anime-style characters enabling precise and smooth animation without compromising the image of the original drawing.
